This is an original 1903 halftone print of an image from the Passion Theatre of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany (Deutschland). The town is famous for its Passion Play, first performed in 1634, and presented once every ten years thereafter. The citizens made a vow to God to perform the play after being spared from the bubonic plague in the 17th century. The play involves over 2,000 actors and utilizes all of the residents in the village. The image is Jesus descending from the cross is from the 1900 production.
This item is from a limited edition collection of important historical prints produced in 1903. The edition size produced at that time was out of 1,000 and this collection of prints was numbered 870. The edition and number are not present on the individual item but rather was provided for the collection as a whole.
