This is an original 1905 duotone halftone print of The Bolo Man." The image documents the life of the Philippines at the time Spain ceded the islands to America as a condition of the 1898 Treaty of Paris following the Spanish-American war.

The man holds a bolo in his hand, a large cutting tool of Filipino origin similar to a machete. The blade is used in the jungles of Indonesia, the Philippines, and the sugar fields of Cuba to clear vegetation in agricultural fields and jungles. The blade also has military uses.
