This is an original 1907 black and white in-text wood engraving of the doorway to the room where David Rizzio (Riccio) was murdered in Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Italian courtier was the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots, and he was murdered for a supposedly adulterous affair with the Queen.
