This is an original 1908 black and white halftone print depicting the Penance of St. John Chrysostom. Legend has it that while living as a hermit in the wilderness, a princess approached him, begging for shelter. He allowed her into his cave, trying his hardest to resist his masculine feebleness. Unfortunately, nature got the best of him. Overcome with the demise of his self-control, he promptly retaliated by hastened the death of the princess with the help of a nearby cliff. Then, wracked with guilt, he journeyed to Rome to beg for forgiveness. He was not granted it, so he decided to spend the rest of his unforgiven life like an animal, on his hands and knees until one day, lo and behold, the princess returned, clutching his suckling babe to her chest. His penance then ended, the child forgave him.
