This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the British camp on the Gallipoli peninsula during World War I. The caption begins, "The Dardanelles expedition in its inception was naval, but as it was soon found that the warships were unable to force the Straits except at a loss that the Allies did not care to hazard, the army was called on for cooperation..."
