This is an original 1936 halftone print of Japanese geisha's having their hair done on the left, and on the right, a girl wearing a mask at the Tokyo Horse Show. The mask was worn to prevent the spreading of germs and colds. The caption writes, "She [Japanese women] will often wear the traditional coiffure of the Japanese, an elaborate whorling structure buttressed and cemented with combs and fish grease (the geisha affect a similar style, as seen to the left). These coiffures are also made in the form of wigs for bobbed heads..." Photography by Henle and Natori.
