This is an original 1938 two-color cover for the October issue of LIFE, featuring an image of 18-year-old Wilmington, California native Margie Lassell and 15-year-old Long Beach native Barbara Anne Walling. The two girls are one of many drum majorettes who led bands in the American Legion parade in Los Angeles. Lassell goes to Compton Junior College and leads the drum and bugle corps of the Anaheim Legion Post and Walling is still in junior high school and leads the Long Beach Municipal Band.
