1938 Wood Engraving Gosta Berling Portrait Sweden Saga Novel Thornton XGG1

This is an original 1938 black and white wood engraving of a portrait of Gösta Berling, the main character of Selma Lagerlöf's novel, "Gösta Berlings Saga." The novel was first published in 1891 and takes place in Värmland, Sweden (Sverige).

Thornton Oakley (1881-1953) was an American illustrator known for his work with "Century," "Harper's Monthly," and "National Geographic." Oakley collaborated with his wife, Amy, while creating a series of travel books. Amy wrote the text, and Thornton illustrated. Oakley studied at the University of Pennsylvania, and received degrees in architecture.

Thornton Oakley

(1881-1953) Thornton Oakley was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in architecture. He also studied illustration with Howard Pyle. He was best known for his depiction of industrial subjects. OakleyÕs work appeared in numerous books and magazines, including Harper's, The Century, Collier's, and Everybody's Magazine. His paintings are in the collections of many museums.
