This is an original 1939 tipped-in color print of Italian Renaissance painter Tiziano Vecelli's (Titian)
Bacchus and Ariadne, depicting the moment when Bacchus first spies Ariadne and, falling in love with her instantly, leaps from his chariot to be with her. In the sky above is Ariadne's crown, represented by a circle of stars. Unfortunately, the original painting has badly deteriorated over the years due to mismanaged cleaning which has left the sky looking extremely flat compared to the writhing forms below. The music group The Crash Test Dummies parodied it on the cover of their album
God Shuffled His Feet.
