Henry Varnum Poor (1888-1970) was a native of Chapman, Kansas prior to relocating to California, and, finally, New City, Rockland County, New York. Poor received his formal art education at the Academie Julian in Paris, as well as at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Slade School of Art in London. He was most recognized for his paintings, illustrations, murals, sculptures and mosaics, as well as his modernism style. PoorÕs works primarily centered on coastal landscapes, figures, aquatic and undersea imagery, mountain landscapes, winterscapes, portraits, genre and still life subjects. His art has been exhibited at the Panama Pacific International Exhibition of 1915 in San Francisco, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Carnegie Institute, the California Art Club, the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Art Association, the National Institute of Arts and Letters and more. Poor was affiliated with the WPA Federal Arts Project, the California Art Club, the San Francisco Art Association and the National Academy of Design. Later, Poor served as an instructor at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
