This is an original 1945 halftone print of a Chinese family making cloth shoes to be sold at a marketplace vendor. The caption writes, "Making shoes: in one of the rooms of their family's dwelling, the women above are making cloth shoes to be sold in a room that fronts the street. Even in large cities most Chinese, business, still primitive, is carried out on a family basis, with manufacture and sales under one roof. China's modernization must in some way find roots in this cottage industry."
